For years, I killed houseplants with remarkable consistency. I watered them faithfully, talked to them occasionally, and moved them around when they looked unhappy. They died anyway.

The problem, it turned out, wasn't my care. It was my windows. I kept buying plants I liked the look of and putting them wherever there was space, without ever asking what kind of light they needed.

Once I started matching plants to windows, almost everything changed.

## Know your light

Before buying anything, spend a day paying attention to each window. How many hours of direct sun does it get? Is the light harsh at midday or soft all day long? These details matter far more than how often you water.

In the Northern Hemisphere, a rough guide:

- **South-facing:** bright, direct sun for most of the day.
- **West-facing:** strong, warm afternoon sun.
- **East-facing:** gentle morning sun, then bright indirect light.
- **North-facing:** soft, indirect light all day, with little or no direct sun.

## Matching plants to windows

**South windows** suit sun lovers: succulents, cacti, rosemary, and citrus trees. Most leafy tropical plants will scorch here unless set back from the glass.

**West windows** work well for jade plants, bird of paradise, and many herbs, which can handle the afternoon heat.

**East windows** are the easiest of all. Most houseplants, including pothos, philodendrons, peace lilies, and ferns, thrive in that gentle morning light.

**North windows** call for plants that tolerate lower light: snake plants, ZZ plants, cast iron plants, and some calatheas.

> Most houseplant problems are really light problems in disguise.

## A few simple habits

- **Water less than you think.** More houseplants die from overwatering than from neglect. Check the soil first.
- **Rotate your plants** every couple of weeks so they grow evenly instead of leaning toward the window.
- **Clean the leaves.** Dust blocks light. A damp cloth every month or so makes a surprising difference.

These days, every windowsill in my apartment has something green on it. Not because I've become a better gardener, but because I finally stopped fighting the light I have.
